1. Arbor Day Foundation’s 2011 Partners in Community Forestry National
Conference: request for presentation proposals (due April 8)
You are invited to submit a presentation proposal for the Arbor Day
Foundation’s 2011 Partners in Community Forestry National Conference,
held November 15–17, 2011 at Disney’s Coronado Springs
Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
This annual urban forest gathering continues to
serve as a platform for sharing:

best practices in urban forest management

sustainable partnership models
·

innovations in community tree programs and projects
·

recent developments in regulation, and more!
Presentation opportunities are available in general and breakout
sessions, technology trainings and panel discussions. This unique event
is designed to foster learning and sharing across traditional urban
forestry groups, in addition to new organizations and audiences.
Special consideration will be given to creative
presentations that incorporate and highlight partnerships and
collaboration, as well as those providing time for audience engagement
and small group work.
Proposals
are due April 8th.

2. California Urban Wood Conference – May 19-21, 2011
Registration is open for the upcoming California Urban Wood Conference to
be held at the Presidio in San Francisco on May 19 – 21. This is a big
event for the emerging California Urban Forest Products Industry and will
be a chance for urban foresters, researchers, arborists, educators and
business owners to learn from each other. There will be great workshops
on Thursday and Friday, and a day-long public showcase of how urban
products on Saturday. Check out the impressive speaker line-up and go see
the great artisanal work!

3. California Center for Sustainable Energy workshops
The California Center for Sustainable Energy (based in San Diego) has
launched an impressive outreach and education effort. Upcoming workshops

Cal Poly’s Matt Ritter Discusses His Newest Book, A
Californian’s Guide to the Trees Among Us
Thursday, April 7, 2011 from 12:30 - 1:30 PM at the City County Library
located at 995 Palm Street, San Luis Obispo, the City of San Luis Obispo
Public Works Department Urban Forest Division, along with the Central
Coast Urban Forest Council (CCUFC), invites anyone interested in learning
about trees to attend this informative and free presentation by noted
local Cal Poly Professor, Matt Ritter.
The CCUFC will hold a general meeting from 11 AM –
noon. Beginning at 12:30 PM, Professor Ritter will talk about his newest
book, A Californian’s Guide to the Trees Among Us. Following his
presentation, Professor Ritter will sign copies of his book and City
Urban Forest Arborists will be available to answer questions about trees.
Beginning
at 2 PM, San Luis Obispo City Arborist, Ron Combs, will lead a walk for
those interested in learning about the many beautiful and unique trees
located in Downtown San Luis Obispo and Mission Plaza.

San Luis Obispo Sponsors Arbor Day Celebration

28 Years As A Tree City USA
Saturday, April 9, 2011 from 9 am to 11 am the City
of San Luis Obispo Public Works Department Urban Forest Division, will
sponsor an Arbor Day Celebration at Mitchell Park. Everyone is invited to
see the Art & Prose Contest Winners and help plant a tree this Arbor
Day!
The
City Council will present Certificates and tee shirts to the winners of
the art and prose contest. Thanks to generous sponsors the City will
provide coffee, juices and breakfast goodies. Donations will be accepted
to help cover future Arbor Day activities and tree plantings in San Luis
Obispo.
At 11 am, Tree Committee Chairman and Cal Poly
Biology Professor Matt Ritter, will lead a walk for those interested in
learning about the many trees in Mitchell Park.
5. Inland Urban Forest Council Announces the First in Its Series of
Lectures on Mature Trees in the Landscape

Dr. John Kabashima, Orange County’s UC Cooperative
Extension Director and research entomologist will review insect pests of
landscape trees and give an update on recent exotic and invasive insect
pests of mature landscape trees. Dr. Kabashima has been an environmental
horticulture advisor with UC Cooperative Extension for 24 years. He has
focused his research on the biological control of exotic pests and
insect, disease, and weed management in ornamental horticulture
production systems.
The Riverside-Corona Resource Conservation District
(RCRCD) is a local government agency that helps conserve the natural
resources (soil, water, plants, and wildlife) of areas within western
Riverside and San Bernardino Counties in southern California. Technical
advice and educational programs are available to the community.

7. LA County Oak Woodlands Conservation Management Plan
available online
The LA
County Oak Woodlands Conservation Management Plan evolved over a two year
period, and incorporates the input from over 100 community members, as
well as over 3,500 hours of time spent reading, writing and thinking
about oak woodlands contributed by the Los Angeles County Foresters,
Regional Planning staff, Board of Supervisors staff, Resource
Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains (RCDSMM) staff,
Building Industry Association (BIA) staff, University of California
Integrated Hardwood Range Management Program (UC/IHRMP) staff, California
Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) staff, local arborists and
consultants. This is an impressive, volunteer-driven effort!

available for comment from October 2009 to January 2011, and the final

Program Stakeholder Call

Sustainable Urban Forests Coalition (SUFC) for an Urban & Community
Forestry Program stakeholders call. Paul Ries, Director of Cooperative
Forestry, USDA Forest Service, will provide a briefing on the FY 2012
President's proposed budget for the Urban and Community Forestry Program.
Learn what strategic initiatives are proposed, and how the Urban and
Community Forestry Program will help America's Great Outdoors initiative.
All cooperators and
community partners involved in urban natural resources issues are
encouraged to attend. There will be a brief period for Q & A at the
close of the call. Space is limited--register now to secure a call-in
line.
